Considering how things have been going, it’s not a surprise the Vancouver Canucks don’t know who their goalie will be on Tuesday in Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series with the Nashville Predators.
Despite using three goalies, the Canucks lead the series 3-1. Each goaltender has won a game.
Their No. 1 puck stopper Thatcher Demko started and won Game 1. But the following day, it was announced that he had suffered an injury and might miss the remainder of the series. Demko is week-to-week. Backup Casey DeSmith was in goal for the next two. Game 3 was his first career playoff win.
But DeSmith was unavailable on Sunday because of an injury that did not become apparent until that day. So, Arturs Silovs, who had been called up from the AHL, got the net in Game 4.
Vancouver was down 3-1 late in the third period but rallied for a stunning 4-3 overtime victory, giving Silovs his first playoff win in his postseason debut. Silovs made 27 saves.
Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said he was going “by the hour” in determining DeSmith’s status for Game 5.
“We’ll see how close we get him to 100% before I make that decision,” Tocchet said via Kevin Woodley of NHL.com. “But nobody’s ever 100% in the playoffs.”
Silovs, 23 has played only nine NHL games over two seasons. He was 3-1 with a 2.47 goals-against average and .881 save percentage in four games during the regular season.
