FDIC Chairman To Resign After Sexual Harassment Scandal

FDIC Chairman To Resign After Sexual Harassment Scandal In the first – but certainly not last – major shake up at a key US financial regulator under the Biden admin, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Martin Gruenberg bowed to pressure to resign from the bank regulator after an external investigation found widespread sexual harassment at the agency and lawmakers of both parties berated his leadership, capping a nearly two-decade career at the agency. In a press release, Gruenberg said he would resign once a successor had been confirmed, avoiding an outcome that would leave FDIC Vice Chairman Travis Hill, a Republican, as the agency’s acting chairman. Hill is a former staffer at the agency who has served on the five-member board for about a year. “It has been my honor to serve at the FDIC as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Director since August of 2005”, Gruenberg wrote. “Throughout that time …

Imaginary Friend Movies to Watch After John Krasinski’s IF

Photo Credit: Paramount Pictures (via YouTube)

This weekend, John Krasinski’s IF, a fantasy comedy about imaginary friends, was released. The concept itself is familiar as there have been many imaginary friend movies in the past; Hollywood has explored the idea throughout the years in various ways, albeit not always in the same lighthearted, family-friendly tone. So, if you walked out of IF desiring a more profound or darker exploration of the imaginary friend concept, we’ve got you covered.

Read on for ten films to watch after IF. Note that not all of these are family adventures.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

The most obvious comparison to IF is Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic E.T., a story about a young boy named Elliot (Henry Thomas) who befriends a stranded alien. The concept brewed from Spielberg’s personal experience. After his parents’ divorce, a very young Spielberg imagined a best friend to guide him through the painful process, which is why it earns an honorary spot in our best imaginary friend movies. E.T. explores this notion by having its kind-hearted alien only interact with the children in the film, practically hidden from Elliot’s mother. Ultimately, Elliot’s friendship with E.T. helps the child navigate a tumultuous time and prepares him for the journey ahead.

Fight Club (1999)

David Fincher’s Fight Club lies on the opposite end of the IF and E.T. spectrum. This incredibly dark satire follows a world-weary recluse (Edward Norton) and his imaginary pal, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), attempting to destroy the establishment oppressing the world. Of course, we don’t know the truth about Tyler until the final reel, even though Fincher sprinkles subliminal clues throughout the picture. Eventually, Durden, in his own morbid way, helps our protagonist sort out his problems, leaving him in a better mental state than when we first met him. I think.

Cloak & Dagger (1984)

A few years after E.T., Henry Thomas starred in another family adventure featuring a pretend friend. Except, this time, the friend in question, action hero Jack Flack (the late, great Dabney Coleman), is, in fact, imaginary. Darker and more violent than your typical family flick, Cloak & Dagger follows Thomas’ Davey Osborne as he evades spies seeking a top-secret device in his possession. Taut, well-acted, and reasonably entertaining, this fantasy drama plays like an 80s mix tape, clunky tech and all. The story goes deeper than it has any right to, leading to a surprisingly emotional finale.

Inside Out (2015)

Pixar’s Inside Out remains one of the studio’s best offerings, a creative, colorful journey through a child’s mind dealing with the emotional rollercoaster of adolescence. Here, we follow the five “emotions” residing inside the mind of a young girl named Riley (Kaitlyn Davis), namely Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). Riley, you see, just moved to a new town and suddenly finds herself dealing with complex feelings, diminishing Joy’s impact and paving the way for more Sadness. Joy traverses through Riley’s mind, hoping to reignite her happiness. This wild journey brings her face-to-face with relics from the kid’s past, including her old imaginary pal, Bing Bong (Richard Kind).

Like all of Pixar’s early works, Inside Out packs an emotional wallop. Still, the picture is also clever, beautifully animated, and often hilarious — a modern classic and a fitting addition to our list of imaginary friend movies.

The Shining (1980)

Delving back into bleaker territory, Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining dips into the imaginary friend concept with terrifying results. In this case, young Danny (Danny Lloyd) conjures a fictional pal named Tony to deal with the fear and stress brought upon by his father (Jack Nicholson). As typical, Kubrick’s picture welcomes many theories regarding its deeper meanings. Every conclusion leads to a pitch-black ending involving axes, dead people, and a climactic chase through a snow-filled maze.

The Shining will rock you to your core. You can follow it up with Mike Flanagan’s equally disturbing sequel, Doctor Sleep. You’re welcome.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Taika Waititti wrote, directed, and co-stars in this dramedy about a Hitler Youth named Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) who discovers that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their basement. This realization causes Jojo to re-examine his beliefs, including his friendship with an imaginary (and free-spirited) Adolf Hilter (Waititti). Though darkly comedic, incredibly entertaining, and profound, Jojo Rabbit earned many well-deserved awards and accolades. It’s the type of film that lives with you forever.

Hide and Seek (2005)

John Polson’s forgettable early 2000s thriller finds a few new ways to utilize the imaginary friend concept. After the death of his wife, David Callaway (Robert DeNiro) moves to upstate New York with his daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning). There, Emily starts imagining a friend named Charlie. At first, this new character appears benevolent, but eventually, violent occurrences transpire, leaving David to investigate whether or not Charlie is a real person.

Hide and Seek is the type of B-movie trash you’d pick up from Blockbuster only after all the top-tier rentals were gone, but it’s still worth a watch. The cast is great, and while the twist is easy to deduce, there are enough shocking moments to ensure a moderately entertaining evening.

Harvey (1950)

This lighthearted romp sees Jimmy Stewart’s Elwood P. Dowd seemingly befriending an imaginary rabbit named Harvey, much to the chagrin of his family. Viewers are left to deduce whether or not Elwood is actually insane or literally seeing a 6-foot-tall rabbit. Stewart, as always, is terrific and wholeheartedly sells the absurd premise with typical charismatic zeal. The picture might be too dated or outlandish for some. Still, those willing to give it a chance will enjoy a whimsical, often hilarious, comedy.

Drop Dead Fred (1991)

Phoebe Cates stars in this outlandish comedy about a woman who releases her imaginary friend, “Drop Dead Fred” (Rik Mayall), to help guide her through a troubling time. A flop upon its release, Drop Dead Fred has gone on to achieve cult status, deservedly so. It’s weird, dumb fun, and the type of film only the early 90s could produce. Cates displays terrific comic timing, underscoring the insanity with a natural innocence that somehow makes her more appealing and scoring a spot on our list of the best imaginary friend movies.

A Beautiful Mind (2001)

Ron Howard pushes the idea of imaginary friends to the limit with Best Picture winner A Beautiful Mind. Except here, the concept is more frightening than fanciful, as Russell Crowe’s John Nash contends with figures crafted from schizophrenia. A brilliant mathematician, Nash must determine what is real and imagined to fulfill his quest to discover a great idea.

Crowe and co-star Jennifer Connelly deliver astonishing performances, and Howard effectively conveys the horrors of Nash’s disease. While the real-life events are decidedly less cloying than the picture suggests, A Beautiful Mind remains a powerful look at a fascinating individual.

Maybe We’re Closer To “You’ll Own Nothing” Than We Realize

Maybe We’re Closer To “You’ll Own Nothing” Than We Realize Authored by Charles Hugh Smith via OfTwoMinds blog, Maybe we should rephrase the slogan to “you’ll appear to own things you don’t actually control and be happy.” The World Economic Forum’s catchphrase you’ll own nothing and be happy was widely mocked as an eyebrow-raising vision of a “sharing economy” future without the implicit agency granted by full ownership. Renting stuff that one needed only for one-time use has long been a market, and car-sharing makes sense for urban dwellers who only need a vehicle on occasion. But to own nothing still implies powerlessness and poverty, not happiness, which continues to be associated with owning income streams and nice things, i.e. wealth. Given our dependence on software / digital rights and the phantom wealth of credit-asset bubbles,”how much do we actually own?” is a fair question. Consider the recent New York Times article Why Tech Companies Are Not Your Friends: Lessons From …

Map Shows Latest Cartel Activity In Mexico As Drug Lords Should Fear A Potential Trump Victory Every six months, the US drug death catastrophe eclipses the Vietnam War. The vast majority of deaths are derived from fentanyl-laced narcotics, which come from Mexico (and chemicals sourced initially from China), via open southern borders pushed by radical leftists in the White House. More recently, the House Select Committee on China revealed that the Chinese Communist Party used tax rebates to subsidize the manufacturing and exporting of fentanyl chemicals abroad.   About a year and a half ago, the conservative think tank Center for Renewing America penned a note titled “It’s time to wage war on transnational drug cartels.” In recent weeks, a Rolling Stone report said former President Trump is seriously considering deploying America’s Special Forces operators to combat cartel leaders if he wins in November.  The conversations …

What Army Is The ICC Sending To Arrest Benjamin Netanyahu?

The same day the Biden administration and European Union offered their condolences over the death of Iran’s Ebrahim Raisi, the “Butcher of Tehran,” the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, sought the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli war council members over imaginary war crimes.

The first question we need to ask is: Karim Khan and what army?

It’s not worth taking a deep dive into the intricacies of law and war, because Hamas does not recognize any moral or legal restrictions on warfare and the International Criminal Court has no real jurisdiction over anyone, anyway. Khan says, “Nobody is above the law.” But there is no such thing as international law. The term is a contradiction and a fantasy. Law is a system of rules regulating citizens — in our case, with the consent of the governed — and is overseen with due process and enforced with penalties. Americans do not recognize any international government, so there can’t be “international law.”

Though we occasionally enter treaties with other nations — neither the U.S. nor Israel signed onto the ICC agreement in 2002 — the ultimate authority that governs us is the Constitution. We do not recognize the ability of illiberal European institutions to punish our citizens, and neither does Israel.

None of that is to mention that the ICC is an enemy of the Jewish State masquerading as a court. Just read the indictment.

To begin with, the ICC draws a moral equivalence between the actions of Israel and Hamas. Need it be repeated, Hamas — which even the EU designates as a terrorist organization — targets civilians, women, and children for murder and rape and torture. It is still holding hostages, among them Americans. It does not recognize any rules of warfare.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was never indicted by the ICC. Nor has Bashar al Assad. Nor has Xi Jinping. Nor have dozens of other genocidal dictators. Netanyahu is charged with “extermination,” “starvation of civilians,” and “intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population,” among other imaginary crimes. The ICC presumably relies on the wholly conjured fatality statistics provided by Hamas and spread by the media and the left. The IDF estimates it has killed around 15,000 terrorists from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, or half of fatalities — which is a better civilian-to-combatant ratio in an urban warfare setting than perhaps any in history.

Notice as well that indictments only charge members of right-center Likud who are in the war cabinet. Right now, Israel has a unity government. Every major political party in Israel is in basic agreement that Hamas must be destroyed in Gaza. There is no government coalition that could survive which does not hunt down the remaining Hamas battalions. And the war cabinet, overseeing the decisions that brought on the ICC indictments, features Netanyahu’s biggest political rival Benny Gantz, as well. Yet he is not charged.

Placing blame on this one man falls in line with the American left’s rhetoric about Israel’s democratically elected unity government. Using Netanyahu as a strawman is a politically expedient way to attack Israel’s democracy. The entire point of the ICC indictments is to further isolate Israel and reward Hamas. (Israel was about to host Khan to explain their decision making process, but the “prosecutor” was not interested.)

In this regard, the real tell is that the alleged crimes cover actions in both the “territory of Israel” and the “State of Palestine.”

The ICC creates a fictitious “state” and downgrades an existing one to a “territory” — even though it is recognized by most United Nations member states.

There is no Palestine. An independent Arab Palestine has never existed. There is no historical precedent for it. It didn’t exist under Ottoman rule or the British Mandate or, in the end, under an United Nations Partition Plan that was rejected by every single Arab state and Palestinian leadership. It didn’t exist when the Palestinians were ruled by governments in Jordan and Egypt (a time when there was virtually no international pressure to create an independent “Palestine”) and it didn’t come into existence when the Arab states rejected Israel’s peace gestures after the 1967 and 1973 wars.

If Palestinians keep supporting nihilism and terrorism, such a state may never exist. And it won’t make one lick of difference how the UN or ICC or EU describes Gaza in press releases.

Marred By Lobbying Conflicts, Georgia Election Board Member Resigns

Georgia State Election Board (SEB) member Ed Lindsey resigned his post on Friday, months after The Federalist uncovered his history of voting on cases before the board involving clients he lobbied for.

“I very much am concerned about this coming election, and I want to make sure that regardless of the outcome, that folks can have confidence in the accuracy of the results,” Lindsey said in a statement. “I enjoyed being part of the process to make that happen, and I wish my successor luck in getting the state through 2024.”

Lindsey was appointed to serve on the SEB by Georgia’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives in January 2022.

Friday’s revelation came nearly two months after The Federalist reported that Lindsey presided over several cases involving DeKalb and Cobb Counties during his time as an SEB member. According to Georgia lobbyist registration and disclosure reports, not only is Lindsey registered as a lobbyist for the governments of DeKalb and Cobb Counties, he’s also a lobbyist for Dentons US LLP, a global law and lobbying firm that was contracted with both localities as recently as last year.

Lindsey also previously lobbied on behalf of the National Vote at Home Coalition, a left-wing organization that pushes insecure mail-in voting policies and notably interfered in the 2020 election to the benefit of Democrats.

According to the Georgia SEB’s Code of Conduct, members of the board are required to “avoid any appearance of conflict and/or impropriety” and are expected to recuse themselves from any matter before the SEB in which the member or member’s employer has provided services to a “respondent, complainant, or witness.” State law also prohibits members of state boards from “engag[ing] in any business with the government, either directly or indirectly, which is inconsistent with the conscientious performance of his governmental duties.”

When pressed on why he resigned from the State Election Board, Lindsey provided The Federalist with a copy of his resignation letter. Sent to Speaker Jon Burns on May 16, Lindsey described conversations the two purportedly had earlier this year about how “the 2024 election year will be a challenging one for the SEB and all of Georgia’s election officials, as the State will face complex, and at times over heated, election issues, claims, and counter claims over the coming months.”

Lindsey noted how his current term on the board has expired and his role was now that of a “holdover appointee,” but added that he has “expressed that [he] was willing and prepared, if necessary, to stay on during this contentious election year until [Burns was] ready to appoint [his] replacement.”

“In our talk yesterday, you informed me that you have found someone to appoint and wish to do so this week,” Lindsey wrote. “My reading of the statute at this point in the year is that technically in order for you to be able to do so, I need to resign to give you that ability. Therefore, effective at Noon, May 17, I hereby resign my position as a Member of the State Election Board in order for you to appoint my replacement.”

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Burns selected Janelle King to replace Lindsey on Friday. A conservative media figure and former deputy director of the Georgia GOP, King is “the co-chairwoman of the conservative political action committee Let’s Win For America Action with her husband, Kelvin King, a Republican and former candidate for the U.S. Senate.”

Speaking about her appointment on Friday, King said she believes it’s the SEB’s job to uncover any potential irregularities in elections, including those that occurred in the 2020 election.

“If there is clear evidence that nothing happened, or clear evidence that something happened, that’s what I’m going to lean toward, and that’s where I was even in 2020,” she said. “I’m going to continue to lean into clear facts and evidence, and let that be the decision maker.”

Lindsey’s resignation came days after he cast a deciding vote in a case before the board involving the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections and its purported violations of election laws during the 2020 election. As my colleague Brianna Lyman previously reported, the county double-scanned more than 3,000 ballots during the state’s 2020 presidential recount.

While Lindsey acknowledged the “clear evidence that in 2020 there were numerous violations of regulations and statutes,” he voted against sending the matter to the state attorney general for further investigation. According to the Georgia Recorder, Lindsey’s motion — which the SEB approved — “allows the county to avoid paying a fine or having the attorney general investigate the double-counting of 3,075 ballots and other allegations of irregularities during the 2020 presidential recount.”

Lindsey also helped defeat a resolution brought before the SEB earlier this year that would have sent a recommendation to the Georgia General Assembly to repeal no-excuse mail-in balloting.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Review: An Uninspired Retread

Just once, I would love it if Tamara was actually home. Her friends clearly miss her and are so concerned for her that they’ll kill anyone who stops them from finding her.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a new horror movie set to kick off a reboot trilogy for this horror franchise. It kicked off in 2008 with Bryan Bertino’s original The Strangers movie starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, which has become a bit of a cult film. 10 years after, the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night came out, and that movie was better than many expected. And now, we have a new trilogy, with Chapters 2 and 3 set to be released over the next year. And truth be told, I could not be less excited to see what happens next.

This movie adds so little to the franchise that it might as well be considered a remake of the 2008 film. It’s not a continuation of The Strangers: Prey at Night, nor does it acknowledge the events of either of its two predecessors. It seems as if Lionsgate simply wants to make more The Strangers movies, so they’re telling Bertino’s original movie again but expanding the story into a trilogy. But when you have a movie reboot so absurdly similar to the original, you’re going to invite comparisons to be drawn. And The Strangers: Chapter 1 is just an inferior version of that 2008 movie.

Like the first movie, it advertises how this is based on a true story and shares statistics about the amount of violent crimes that happen in the U.S. every year. It’s meant to be harrowing, and it is to an extent. Afterward, we have an opening scene where people are hunted down and killed by three masked strangers. Unless this scene comes back in Chapter 2 or 3, I do not understand the function of this scene besides the possibility that a test screening reaction wanted a kill earlier in the movie. A lot of horror movies have an opening kill, but this one does not add anything to the plot. It’s completely unnecessary and feels like a reshoot.

We are then introduced to our new characters, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez). These two are a couple celebrating their five-year anniversary with a road trip. We instantly get a sense of their lack of common sense when she kisses him as he drives, which (expectedly) nearly gets them into a head-on collision with a truck. We then see that Ryan is asthmatic and requires an inhaler. Can you imagine if that inhaler comes back later and becomes crucial to the plot? I sure can because it’s an obvious cliché and we just saw this trope in the 2022 Scream movie.

Horror movies like The Strangers: Chapter 1 work well because the characters are isolated. It needs to be established early on that the characters are miles away from civilization and any hope for help is far away. This movie does that and has the sense to make Ryan suspicious and skeptical of the inciting event that causes them to hole up in this AirBnB. There are hints throughout this movie that the masked killers will get a bit more of a backstory in the trilogy and that some townsfolk may be involved in their actions. I don’t think the killers in The Strangers need that because the fear comes from how purely random the violence is.

What does this movie do differently from the original? It’s a bit more deliberate in that choice to put the characters far away from everyone else. They’re in a cabin in the woods, which is a classic horror setup. The big difference is the relationship between the characters. The first movie had a couple filled with sadness and tension because she had just turned down her boyfriend’s marriage proposal. It’s filled with sadness and emotional weight. But The Strangers: Chapter 1 features a very happy couple. They try to bring in a plot where it’s been five years and he hasn’t proposed yet, and they’re moving for work, but it’s very dull compared to the first movie.

As the film progresses, you realize that this movie is just recycling what we saw in the first Strangers movie beat for beat. The knock on the door, asking if Tamara is home, the killers entering the house unbeknownst to the woman, silent staring, the man not believing the woman when she says she saw someone in the house, “hello” gets written all over the door, and on and on and on. The reason why The Strangers: Prey at Night is my favorite movie in the series is because director Johannes Roberts injected life and personality into that film with neon lighting, a synth soundtrack, far more kills, and a new story. The Strangers: Chapter 1 is simply rehashing what we’ve already seen before.

It’s directed by Renny Harlin, a director who had high-profile work in the ’80s and ’90s with A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea, and a personal favorite of mine: Die Hard 2. His wide-released Hollywood work has slowed down in recent years, and this movie was gift-wrapped to be a return to form for him. But he doesn’t bring any particular style to the series. He definitely puts thought and intention into his shots, but he doesn’t bring much new to the table. It’s not a poorly directed film. There are a few annoying jump scares, but it’s far from horrendous. There just isn’t much that’s unpredictable in this movie, especially if you’ve seen the first film.

The sole sequence that feels a bit original is one where Maya and Ryan need to crawl under the house and be as quiet as possible. But even this sequence feels reminiscent of a scene from A Quiet Place. This movie is derivative, but I think the biggest turn-off is how stupid the characters can be. During one key moment towards the end, Ryan is holding a gun, and he does something so stupid that everyone in my theater began to scream at the screen. When your main characters are so dumb that the audience starts rooting for the killers, that’s not a good sign. All I can hope for is that there’s a more original story to tell in The Strangers: Chapter 2 because there’s currently no reason to watch this movie over Bertino’s 2008 original or the criminally underrated The Strangers: Prey at Night.

SCORE: 5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 5 equates to “Mediocre.” The positives and negatives wind up negating each other, making it a wash.

The Only Discernible Crime In Trump Trial Is Michael Cohen Admitting To Stealing $30,000

The only discernible crime in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s lawfare case against former President Donald Trump is that the star witness, convicted liar Michael Cohen, admitted Monday on the stand that he stole from the Trump Organization because he was “angry.”

Cohen admitted that in 2017 he asked Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg for $50,000 to pay back tech firm RedFinch. Cohen paid the firm $20,000 but pocketed $30,000 for himself because he was “angry” that he didn’t get the bonus from Trump that he thought he deserved, according to Deadline.

“You stole from the Trump organization, right?” Blanche asked according to MSNBC.

“Yes, sir,” Cohen testified.

“You did steal from the Trump Organization based upon the expected reimbursement, correct?” Blanche pressed.

“Yes, sir,” Cohen testified, according to MSNBC.

Cohen later testified that the amount he stole was double than what he originally claimed because he was given money to account for taxes.

In fact, Cohen’s admission is “more serious of a crime than falsifying business records,” CNN’s Senior Legal Analyst Elie Honig said.

“The money that Michael Cohen stole from under Donald Trump’s nose by his own admission, was part of the $420,000 that Michael Cohen was reimbursed for Stormy Daniels,” Honig explained. “So the heart of the prosecution’s case is, that whole setup where they were going to repay Michael Cohen $420,000 to reimburse him for Stormy Daniels, that was all done to pay Stormy Daniels. Trump knew it, Trump knew every penny — that’s why he’s guilty. Now it turns out Trump is getting robbed by his own guy.”

Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley also called the development a hit “below the waterline for Cohen but also the prosecutors.”

“They had a man admitting to a major larceny but never charged Cohen. That made Cohen not only their man, but allowed him to keep stolen money,” Turley posted on X.

At the heart of this lawfare case against Trump is claims that payments allegedly made to Cohen to purchase the silence of on-screen prostitute Stormy Daniels should have been classified as campaign expenses rather than legal fees. Former Biden Department of Justice official Matthew Colangelo claimed during opening statements of the trial that “this was a planned, long-running conspiracy to influence the 2016 election, to help Donald Trump get elected through illegal expenditures to silence people who had something bad to say about his behavior.”

But Cohen’s testimony has only further driven a hole into Bragg’s allegations.

Cohen testified last week that when allegations first surfaced in 2011 about the affair, Trump was concerned that the story would hurt his family.

“The first thing that President Trump said to you was that his family wouldn’t like [the story] very much?” Blanche asked.

“That’s true,” Cohen testified.

Rubio Gives Masterclass On Parrying Media Hacks’ Dishonest Election Questions

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio delivered a masterclass Sunday on how Republicans should respond when media partisans ask them to prematurely commit to accepting the results of the 2024 election.

NBC News’ Kristen Welker asked Rubio if he would “accept the 2024 election results no matter what happens.”

“No matter what happens? No! If it’s an unfair election, I think it’s going to be contested by each side,” Rubio said.

“No matter who wins, Senator? No matter who wins?” Welker asked.

“You’re asking the wrong person! The Democrats are the ones that have opposed every Republican victory since 2000. Every single one. Hillary Clinton…”

“No Democrat has refused to concede,” Welker interjected. “Hillary Clinton conceded. Senator, will you accept the election results?”

“Hillary Clinton said the election was stolen from her, and that Trump was illegitimate. Kamala Harris agreed,” Rubio said. “By the way, there are Democrats serving in Congress today who, in 2004, voted not to certify the Ohio electors because they said those machines had been tampered with. And you have Democrats now saying they won’t certify 2024 because Trump is an insurrectionist and ineligible to hold office. So you need to ask them.”

Rubio then pointed out that having “over 500 illegal dropbox locations” in Wisconsin, for example, is something that legitimately undermines confidence in elections.

Rubio’s answer was excellent because he understands the insidiousness of such a question: Republicans are being goaded to relinquish their right to question problematic election administration. Instead of being bullied into agreeing with Welker’s presuppositions, he immediately went on the offensive.

Left-wing corporate media have already smeared Rubio and other conservatives as election “deniers” for refusing to play into the media’s trap. It’s a cheap trick designed to silence legitimate concerns about election administration by painting them as threats to “democracy.”

When Republicans treat the question as anything but a cheap trick, they put themselves immediately on the defensive by assuming the question’s dishonest premises. That’s exactly what South Carolina senator and potential vice presidential pick Tim Scott did during a recent interview of his own with Welker. When goaded as to whether he would accept the results of the 2020 election, Scott chose to side-step the question.

“At the end of the day, the 47th president of the United States will be President Donald Trump,” he said.

When asked again, Scott responded “That is my statement” and “I look forward to President Trump being the 47th president — the American people will make the decision.”

Scott’s answer was abysmal because he was obviously afraid of the question. But no Republican should be afraid to refuse to play along with corporate media partisans’ bad-faith “gotcha” questions. What’s more, there’s nothing wrong with refusing to resoundingly affirm the results of an election that has not yet taken place, especially at a time when Democrats are deploying everything from weaponized lawfare to unconstitutional attempts to federalize elections via “Bidenbucks” to rig elections in their favor.

Besides, as Rubio pointed out, the 2020 election was far from the first to face scrutiny. Democrats called Republican George Bush’s election in 2000 “fraudulent,” said his 2004 victory was “stolen,” and objected to the certification of Trump’s 2016 election while claiming he had colluded with Russia to steal the presidency.

In the 1960 presidential election, some electors declared Richard Nixon the winner of Hawaii’s electoral votes before a recount eventually led to John F. Kennedy’s electors’ votes being certified. Should Kennedy have resigned his right to question the incorrect initial results prior to the election?

Of course not — yet that’s what Republicans are being asked to do now. They should understand the question as the unserious hackery it is, and answer accordingly.

GOP-Led Bill Protects IVF Industry But Not The Babies It Routinely Kills

Republican Sens. Katie Boyd Britt and Ted Cruz introduced a bill on Monday that would effectively force states that contemplate a ban on in vitro fertilization (IVF) to choose between reining in one of the most profitable, unethical, unborn life-destroying practices on the market and keeping Medicaid funding.

The legislation claims states are not barred from “implementing health and safety standards regarding the practice of in vitro fertilization.” Any state or local government body that explores prohibiting IVF (something no state has seriously considered), however, will face the wrath of those who control the federal pocketbook.

“Our goal is to make sure that any family’s path to bringing a child into the world isn’t compromised by preventable legal confusion,” the senators wrote.

Pro-Life Picking and Choosing

In a Wall Street Journal opinion article meant to promote the bill, Britt and Cruz argued they are committed to protecting “Both Life and IVF.” Yet, throughout their legislative pitch, the Republicans failed to explain exactly how carving out federal protections for a practice responsible for the discard of millions of embryos constitutes safeguarding “life.”

Britt and Cruz both acknowledged the Alamaba Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which confirmed the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location,” was marred by “confusion and misinformation.” Instead of offering an indictment of the corporate media and “partisan” commentators who incited the political panic, however, Britt and Cruz egged on fomented concern with promises to “ensure IVF access is legally protected nationwide.”

The Republicans justified the introduction of the bill with poll numbers claiming IVF is wildly popular among Americans and framing the morally debated technology as a “pro-woman and pro-family solution” because it can end in the birth of a child.

Britt and Cruz both claim to believe life begins at conception and should be protected. They seem eager to overlook, however, the reckless disregard for that life as long as it is the product of a lab.

IVF standard practice requires harvesting and fertilizing multiple eggs to increase the chances of successful petri dish conception. Since Americans undergo hundreds of thousands of IVF cycles per year, it’s no stretch to say countless unborn lives are created only to be pushed aside due to genetic grading, discarded, or abandoned in freezers.

It would be one thing if the Republicans were calling for even the most basic regulation of IVF. Britt and Cruz, however, are doing the opposite.

The pair noted in TV appearances on Monday that they believe IVF should be available to anyone and everyone who wants to create potentially motherless and fatherless children by whatever means necessary.

“This effort should be bipartisan, to make sure that every parent across the country who wants to bring life into this world, and may be struggling with infertility, or others who [want] to use IVF to create the miracle of life bring it into the world and, you know, has a certainty that that’s going to be available to them,” Britt told Bloomberg on Monday.

“People did not want anything to threaten IVF. I agree with that. Katie agrees with that,” Cruz added, noting that his colleagues in the upper chamber feel the same way.

According to corporate media, Democrats, and Republicans, even the slightest whiff of regulation for abortion, genetic testing, the premature disposal of embryos deemed “unviable,” reducing the chance of embryo survival via cryopreservation, and rapidly developing reproductive technologies such as artificial wombs and gene editing would “threaten IVF.”

Why It Matters

Republicans like Britt and Cruz are trying — as Democrats have in recent years in advocating for taxpayer-funded abortions — to weaponize Medicaid funding and strongarm states with moral and ethical concerns about IVF to score political points.

Anyone who truly believes life begins at conception, as research has proven time and time again, should be wary of extending immunity to a technology that is entirely rooted in the desertion and destruction of “leftover” life.

Republicans have successfully stopped, in Cruz’s words, Democrat attempts “to backdoor in broader abortion legislation” disguised as radical IVF protections. Their willingness to offer friendliness and support instead of skepticism and scrutiny to the wild, wild west that is the American fertility industry, however, only feeds the political beast determined to revoke and rebuke the sanctity of life in its most vulnerable form.

Top Gun 3 Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Hasn’t Seen Its Script Yet

As the development of Top Gun 3 continues, producer Jerry Bruckheimer provides an update on it. While the Top Gun: Maverick sequel is highly anticipated, it may be a while before a release date is announced.

Jerry Bruckheimer reveals Top Gun 3’s status following Maverick

Bruckheimer recently opened up about Top Gun 3, Johnny Depp’s potential return in the next Pirates of the Caribbean installment, and the upcoming Formula 1 movie involving Brad Pitt.

Talking to Entertainment Tonight, he was asked about the “pilot dynamic” featuring the leading characters of Top Gun 3. Answering whether it will explore another Maverick-Rooster-like relationship, the producer replied, “I can’t tell you. It’s a secret.”

To the question of having seen a script of the film, he replied, “Not yet. We’re working on it.”

In a previous interview, Bruckheimer confirmed that there is a story idea that he and Tom Cruise “really like.” Giving an idea for the production timeline, Bruckheimer said that it was all dependent on Cruise’s schedule:

“It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it.”

The sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is still over a year away, with a scheduled release date of May 23, 2025. Following that, Cruise is said to appear in his untitled space-based project before returning for Top Gun 3. So, it’ll be a while before the 61-year-old returns as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

In January 2024, Puck reported that Ehren Kruger is penning the script for the upcoming threequel. Besides Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell will also reprise their roles from the previous installment while Joseph Kosinski is returning to direct.

Interview: Babs Olusanmokun Talks The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Babs Olusanmokun about his role as Richard Heron in the movie, plus grappling with director Guy Ritchie. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is now available on Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through from Lionsgate. It will come out on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 25.

“Directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie, this action-comedy tells the incredible true story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming,” says the synopsis. “The top secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks led by Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill), goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly ‘ungentlemanly’ fighting techniques. Ultimately, the task force’s audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern black ops warfare.”

Tyler Treese: How did you first get connected with Guy Ritchie? I know you worked on Wrath of Man before this. Did you guys connect through jiu-jitsu?

Babs Olusanmokun: Not at all. Like, yeah, we, we trained jiu-jitsu together many, many years ago, but he didn’t even remember that. The reality is I was living in Brooklyn, and I sent in a self-tape for Wrath of Man. Subsequently, like three weeks later, I moved to London. The casting person found out I was in town, and all of a sudden they really tried their best to get me on that film, and that was it. Three days into that shoot, then I reminded him like, we’ve actually been together. You actually trained with me many years ago

How is he on the mat? How is it rolling with him?

Oh, he was good. He was very good back then, and he got even better because he’s also a black belt for many years now, so, yeah.

In The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, you have this great role as Richard Heron. You’re really setting things in motion here. It’s a very active, very fun role. What did you like most about your part in the plot of this film?

Just what you said, he was helping to set it up, being a sort of throughline through the story along with Eiza [González]. I thought that was really wonderful to have an opportunity to play with that.

You have a lot of great scenes with Eiza, and she just shines throughout. What stood out about her as a scene partner?

She was super collaborative, you know, she was warm. We really got on well together, so it was really wonderful to work with her. We gave each other space, and just really met within the work in a really lovely way, and that was it. That’s all you need.

She seems like a delight, but Til Schweiger is just so intense and so unlikable in this film. How was that dynamic on set and working with him? I know he is a very talented director as well as an actor, but, boy, he’s horrible in this as a character.

Absolutely. Listen, he was wonderful to work with. He came and he did his thing. He was good to interact with. He was very complimentary of everybody. He was really excited to be working with Guy. He really was. He was very excited about our train scene with myself and Eiza. There was a day he saw that and he just went on and on about it. He really loved it. So yeah, he was very cool to work with.

One of my favorite scenes in the film is the one where you’re planting a bomb, you get caught by the Nazis, and then you turn the tables on them. What was it like filming that sequence? That’s such a fun exchange.

That was cool. That was like one of those, like, you’ve seen it before, and now you get to do your version of it. So to have that warehouse to myself and all of a sudden to have these guys behind me. We planned, of course, the rig of the pistols a while back. So it was very, very cool to finally have the opportunity to pop that out and get rid of these guys, you know?

Now that you’ve worked with Guy multiple times, what was it like coming back for this project where you already have a rapport with him and what he wants from an actor? Is that helpful from your end?

Absolutely. Of course, this role was more substantial than my role in Wrath of Man. So the relationship went even deeper within the work on this. It was fantastic. He was right there really giving his notes, giving the new dialogue every morning, but really engaged and really just sitting there and making sure he was getting what he needed. It felt like we were cooking something and I could see him very excited about what we were doing. I’m already excited. Eiza was already excited, so we just had a lot of fun. We just had a lot of fun working with Guy.

Since you do have such a decorated jiu-jitsu background, has that helped with your acting either through maybe choreography with fight scenes or just the work ethic?

I imagine in a certain kind of way. You know, both things have always been quite different for me, how I approached jiu-jitsu and martial arts. I always saw it as very separate from acting, just studying acting. But with many years of both, I realized sometimes you use the same language, and if there’s discipline, it goes a long way, focus, and movement.

At the same time, the psychological, the mental of being present or things going very wrong. If you’re not present, just like things can go wrong. Jiu-jitsu match, if you’re not present, they can go wrong. In a scene, if you’re not present at all, you won’t be present enough to receive and give. So there’s definitely some comparisons there. It’s just art in general, so I very much love both.

One role I really loved of yours recently was in Dune. I was curious because you’re not in that movie very long, but it’s such a pivotal character-building scene. It’s the apex of that first movie. It completely changes Paul’s character. So what is it like when you’re so pivotal to the movie, but you’re just in a small portion?

I remember getting that film and then being sent the script or at least that scene or the fight scene and maybe just the scene preceding the fight scene. I felt like I understood immediately what the film was going for or the story, as in, yeah, this is a guy that has to be knocked over for this person to be elevated. It’s a rite of passage, so to speak. But of course, my job was to make sure that Jamis was given a lot of life and as much truth as possible, as much of a lived life as possible, so that when we met him and, with that explosion of that fight, that his passing would be something that would stay with us. That was the challenge for me, and that’s really what I wanted to do, to make sure it wasn’t just, “This is the part where we get to the part of the movie where our hero knocks down this person,” and “Wow. Look, he’s a badass.” I wanted us to really feel the life of Jamis and maybe regret the fact that Jamis should not be dying, you know? Just bring as much truth as possible to it.

You’ve had this relationship with Rockstar Games. You were in Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2. How did that relationship come about?

I read. I think they brought me in for an audition. It was like an acting audition, really, but it was one of those where you get maybe a monologue plus something else. The first game I did for them was Max Payne 3, and the director was very excited about what I brought into the room for him, and that was it, really. I just did this monologue. It was a very interesting process doing that.

How Iran Used An Advanced Turkish Drone To Find Raisi’s Helicopter

How Iran Used An Advanced Turkish Drone To Find Raisi’s Helicopter Via Middle East Eye A Turkish high-altitude, long-endurance drone played a central role in finding the wreckage of the helicopter that was carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his delegation on Sunday night. Iranian search and rescue officials reported late on Sunday evening that they believed the helicopter had made a “hard landing” in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. However, progress was hindered for several hours due to adverse weather conditions, including dense fog and rain. Turkish Transportation Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu highlighted another complicating factor: the helicopter either did not have its transponder on or lacked one entirely. An Akinci drone seen from an Azerbijani Mikoyan MiG-29, AFP/handout “We track every aerial signal since Iran is part of the area we are responsible for in search-and-rescue operations,” Uraloglu told Turkish media on Monday. “But we couldn’t get any signal at …

Justice Alito Becomes Latest Target Of Fabricated Controversies To Delegitimize SCOTUS

Far-left activists are so desperate to knock another conservative Supreme Court justice off cases central to their campaign playbook this year that they’ve manufactured another pair of twin scandals to hit a new target: Justice Samuel Alito.

On Sunday, the Daily Beast reported Alito apparently engaged in a scandal when the justice participated in the open stock market.

“U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sold off a chunk of stock in Anheuser-Busch Inbev in August 2023, just as a vicious right-wing boycott campaign of the company was reaching full swing, according to financial disclosure reports first spotted by the Substack page Law Dork,” the paper wrote. “The boycott was ostensibly in reaction to a limited social media partnership between trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light, one of AB-Inbev’s best-selling brands.”

According to the Daily Beast, the August transaction was completed with “suspicious timing.” But the Mulvaney boycott hit the Belgian beer company in the spring of last year shortly after the influencer’s Bud Light partnership for March Madness went viral in April, long before Alito’s “suspicious” trade. The immediate boycott over Mulvaney’s sponsorship tanked Anheuser-Busch’s value by $5 billion with the consumer backlash lasting through the spring. The hit on the company’s stock, however, peaked in late May and had begun to plateau in August before eventually recovering. In other words, Alito sold a couple thousand dollars’ worth of stock months after the height of consumers’ rejection of the popular beer company, but the transaction is still drawing headlines in The New Republic and The Independent.

Even if Justice Alito had sold off stock in the spring of 2023 as the backlash against Anheuser-Busch peaked, the trade based on publicly available information is far from scandal. There are no rules prohibiting federal judges from engaging in whatever conduct leftists simply find offensive. It’s probably no coincidence the non-story about Alito’s open stock transaction dropped on the heels of the New York Times raising controversy about an upside-down flag on the justice’s front lawn.

On Thursday, the New York Times documented the manipulated flag at Alito’s home which flew in the turbulent month of President Joe Biden’s inauguration three years ago. The paper quoted supposed ethics experts to depict the banner of distress as a “‘Stop the Steal’ Symbol on Display” at the home of the conservative justice now deciding on cases related to former President Donald Trump’s objections to electoral certification.

“While the flag was up, the court was still contending with whether to hear a 2020 election case, with Justice Alito on the losing end of that decision,” the Times reported. “In coming weeks, the justices will rule on two climactic cases involving the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, including whether Mr. Trump has immunity for his actions.”

Alito said the flag was put up by his wife over a confrontation with a neighbor who put up a disparaging anti-Trump sign.

The paper has at least seven stories on Alito’s flag, including one in Spanish, wherein the Times is repeatedly questioning Alito’s ability to serve on the court impartially. Federalist Senior Legal Correspondent Margot Cleveland explained why the demands for Justice Alito to recuse himself from Jan. 6-related cases over the incident hold no ground.

“For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume Mrs. Alito placed a ‘Stop the Steal’ sign in the front yard of the home she shares with her husband. Such a sign would qualify as political activity within the meaning of the various ethical codes governing judicial conduct,” Cleveland wrote. The sign, she added, “would clearly fit in the ‘should not engage in other political activity’ prohibition” outlined in legal ethics rules. “But it wasn’t Justice Alito who hung the upside-down flag we are hypothesizing was instead a ‘Stop the Steal’ placard — it was Mrs. Alito. And the Code of Conduct does not govern a spouse’s actions.”

Similar demands for recusal were made against Justice Clarence Thomas whose wife, Ginni, personally petitioned public officials in the Trump White House to protest the results of the 2020 election. Ginni became the target of media smear campaigns and was even investigated by the Democrats’ Select Committee on January 6. Two years ago, former Thomas Law Clerk Wendy Long outlined for The Federalist why calls for Justice Thomas to refrain from ruling on election-related cases over spousal activism were inappropriate.

“Leftists in Congress and the media hyperventilate over every tidbit showing that Justice Thomas’s wife, Ginni, is involved in national conservative politics — most recently, that she pushed for integrity in the 2020 election,” Long wrote. “This isn’t news, and it has nothing to do with Justice Thomas’s ability to be a fair and impartial jurist.”

Recusal, Long explained, is determined primarily by the “financial, legal, personal, or professional interests of the Justice or a family member,” not personal politics or the politics of a spouse.

The Substance: Demi Moore Calls Nude Scenes With Margaret Qualley ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’

Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley’s The Substance movie features full frontal nudity involving the two actresses. Moore recently discussed her experience baring it all in multiple scenes, revealing what was needed to film them.

Demi Moore opens up on The Substance’s full frontal nudity with Margaret Qualley

Speaking of the naked sequences, Moore talked about the rawness needed to tell the story of her upcoming film. She further called the scenes ‘a very vulnerable experience.’

On Monday, at the Cannes Film Festival press conference (via Variety) Moore said:

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story.”

She continued:

“And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

The 61-year-old further credited Qualley for making her feel very comfortable while filming those sequences. She added:

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were. But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

Feminist body horror movie The Substance sees Moore play an aging celebrity who uses the titular drug from the black market. Acting as a device that replicates cells, it creates a younger and better version of Moore’s character, played by Margaret Qualley, in a scene involving nudity for both.

As the story progresses, the two not only share the same space but also have to stay dormant to allow the other to prosper.

The film reportedly got a 13-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the Cannes Festival. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, it also stars Dennis Quaid but is yet to receive an official release date.
